Frequently Asked Questions

You've Asked We've Answered...

How long do I have to wait to get in?

Our counselors have a limited amount of time in which to conduct counseling sessions. However, they will do their very best to limit your wait to no more than two weeks. When our counselors have a completely full caseload, they are happy to refer you to another psychologist or counselor in the area.

How much does it cost?

Dr. Paulk’s fees are $125.00 per hour for individual sessions. While she does not participate in insurance programs at this time, she encourages you to file your own claims with the documentation of services provided by RCS. Many plans cover “out of network” providers.

Do you offer a sliding scale?

We offer a sliding scale on a case by case basis to qualified clients. Please call for specific information.

Do you have evening and weekend hours?

Yes. Extended hours are available.

What is your cancellation policy?

Clients are responsible for canceling appointments 24 hours in advance to avoid charges.

What is Psychological Counseling?

Counseling is usually conducted during face-to-face meetings (or sessions) in which the psychologist and the client talk about what is troubling the client. Counseling works by helping the client look objectively at his/her behaviors, feelings and thoughts in situations that s/he finds troublesome. Counseling can be effective in helping people make important changes in their lives. Counseling is a two-way process that works especially well when clients and their psychologists communicate openly.

Counseling requires a private and confidential relationship in which you can feel safe to talk about your concerns. In order to safeguard this, information you share with your counselor is treated in the strictest confidence. Many people seek counseling at distressing times in their lives. It is important to understand that counseling is a "normal" and natural process of growth that aims to help you with problems you may not be able to resolve on your own.

How do I know if it is working?

You should establish clear goals with your psychologist at the beginning of counseling. Remember that certain goals require more time to reach than others. You may need to adjust your goals depending on how long you plan to participate in counseling. After a few sessions, it is a good sign if you feel the experience is truly a joint effort and that you and your psychologist enjoy good honest communication. On the other hand, you should be open with your psychologist if you find yourself feeling 'stuck' or lacking direction. Both you and your psychologist are responsible for a good working relationship. Be clear about your expectations and share any concerns that develop. Psychological counseling works best when you attend all scheduled sessions.

How much does counseling cost?

Although Dr. Paulk does not participate in every health insurance plan, you can file your own insurance claims. The cost of the counseling varies depending on the duration of the visit and the type of session, whether it is individual or family. Counseling may be covered under some insurance plans. Please check with your insurance company first to find out if Psychological Counseling might be covered.

Why Should I Pay To Talk To Someone?

You may benefit from psychological counseling for many reasons. You may wish to find solutions to specific problems in your life, explore issues in your relationships, better understand your feelings, or develop greater self-esteem. You may wish to define your career direction, or develop greater self-confidence. Nothing is off-limits to discuss. Counselors have worked with people who have experienced a tremendous variety of difficulties. They are trained to listen, understand, and help you with the kinds of problems that you may not be able to resolve on your own.

Working with a counselor, you can discuss your concerns freely and confidentially. You may come to see yourself and others in a different light—helping you to find positive, growth enhancing ways of dealing with the difficult situations you must face. As you talk with a counselor, you may begin to clarify your feelings and needs; you may even develop different goals for yourself.

Is there anything else I should know?

Your psychologist may ask for your permission to speak with your other health care providers in order to coordinate and improve the care that you receive. This can only be done with your permission. It is important for you to know that everything you discuss in therapy is legally confidential and it cannot be released without your specific consent. Your psychologist will discuss confidentiality in detail with you before you begin.

Making the decision to enter counseling may seem a little scary, but it could end up being one of the best decisions you ever make. Regardless of whether your current challenges are severe enough to threaten your daily functioning, or you would like to work on implementing quality of life changes, RCS counselors and psychologists would like to help.
